AYSO badge

I had never seen one until my daughter's last match for the tournament. I saw the referee and he had a different badge, one that I had never seen before. So before the match, I walked past him and gave it a good look. It was an AYSO badge. Nothing like what I had seen before, so I had no idea what to make of it.

The performance was fine, so no comments there, just that I had no idea what to make of his badge.

In Tucson, AYSO occasionally gets asked to help provide referees for some of the tournaments. AYSO is a volunteer organization, so the referees volunteer for the tournament and the tournament will pay the AYSO region for their referees services. Might have been a similar thing. AYSO is associated with US Soccer. Their referee certifications are different probably due to the volunteer aspect of the organization, but the core training is pretty much the same.

Yeah, you'll find that AYSO has a stronger hold in some areas than others-- I started as an AYSO referee myself. Games done for AYSO or with USSF can both count towards certification in both leagues.

I have heard USSF-certified referees say things about AYSO "encouraging bad habits" and promoting refs just because they've been around a while, but this hasn't been my experience at all and I think it's super rude.

Interesting that you'd never seen the badge though. Honestly I think that's mostly due to the area you're in.
