Training class

The local club that I am the director of referees for asked me to put together a little get together for the travel refs in the area. So we are hosting something with a local instructor. He asked me what specific topic he should present and I am at a loss as to what specifically. I told him to focus on things that Grade 7 students would receive that Grade 8s normally do not but what specifically I do not know.

We will have one lecture and one field session, each of about 30 minutes. Do any of you have any suggestions as to what a Grade 8 would like to know if you had the chance to ask an instructor to give you a class? Would love to hear your input.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

Well, speaking as a 7, in our state the 7's and 8's attend the same clinic, so there is somewhat shared knowledge. But here is a list of stuff that alot of 7's and almost all 8's have issues with:

Substitution procedure
Positioning
Advantage
Ceremonial vs. Traditional FKs
Man Management

If I had to choose, I would do the class room session on Man Management. How do you cool down a hot game, Moment of Truth, and dealing with tough situations.

Then, for the field session, I would work on restarts. How to get the wall 10 yards. Do you have to ask for 10 yards (NO!). What about the quick free kick. What if there is misconduct?

Finally, I would devote a little time to the proper substitution procedure.

Good stuff. I appreciate the comment. I certainly think that Advantage is not implemented well for most 8s and Man Management. Will see what the instructor is willing to do but this should be a good conversation starter. Hoping more people weigh in. Thanks again!

I'd break James' "Man Management" suggestion to "Player Management" and "Coach/Technical Area Management." Those topics would be my #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 choices. :)
In Colorado, 'proper' Substitution Procedure is covered at State/Prez Cups. Maybe also a brief discussion of 4th official - being one and how to work with one - is good for 8s looking to advance to 7s.

Soccer training class for children is a great way to help a child grow in the area of social development. They will learn numerous social obligations, such as the importance of a chain of command, being polite, being respectful, sharing, and how they are the same and different from others. Thanks a lot.

Brian is right. Almost no 8's and even most 7's have never really worked as a 4th. A discussion of the position may be beneficial.

Wonderful comments, thanks for that. It is scheduled for next weekend, on the 11th. Will let everyone know how it plays out and what feedback we get.
